PatchWork Community Celebrates PRIDE with Storytelling Event

June is PRIDE month, a time for members of the LGBTQ community to come together and celebrate their identity. But for many, coming out has been a painful experience. At PatchWork Collective, we’re partnering with the non-profit organization Narratives of Pain to host a storytelling event on June 21, 2019, focused on community, support, and healing.

June is PRIDE Month for the LGBTQ Community

Saturday, June 1, 2019, marks the start of PRIDE month. As it has every year since 2011, the City of Ferndale is kicking off the summer season by welcoming thousands of gay, bi, trans, and queer residents and visitors to its streets with a huge Pride festival. This year’s event promises to be bigger than ever, with entertainment, a dance stage, and vendors. Local businesses are showing their support by decorating their windows with rainbows and special offers for the LGBTQ community.

At PatchWork Collective, we want to provide our full support to this very important cause. Our Dungeons and Dragons event earlier this year raised over $280 dollars for Ferndale Pride, and we will be showing our colors throughout the month.

But we also recognize the reason behind the celebration. We know that members of the LGBT community face hardship and discrimination every day at their work, in their places of worship, and even sometimes from their own family. Knowing this, we wanted to find a safe and healthy way to embrace the community and give them space to tell their stories.

PatchWork Collective to Host Narratives of Pain Storytelling Event

On Friday, June 21, 2019, the PatchWork Collective will be pairing with Narratives of Pain, a non-profit organization that hosts storytelling, poetry, and art events designed to help attendees heal from their difficult experiences. According to the organization’s website:

“Narratives of Pain offers a different approach to helping us heal and understand our hurt. Let’s do it through art, music, speech, and poetry. Let’s tell each other our stories. Let’s sing out our pain, and let others be witnesses.”

Friday’s event will pair this healing experience with Pride themes, giving members of the LGBTQ community and their supporters space to tell their stories within a supportive and healing environment. PatchWork CEO, Lisa Schmidt says:

“As soon as I heard what Narratives of Pain does, I knew it would be a great way for PatchWork to show our support to the LGBT community. Coworking is all about supporting our community members through good times and bad. We recognize the pain felt by many members of the gay and trans communities as they come out. We want to offer a safe space for them to tell their stories and work together toward healing.”
